Introduction
This project allows you to create simple, working, speakers out of conductive tape and a magnet! Below you'll find lesson plans, design templates, as well as student activity guides. This project can be done with sound output from a cell phone or computer, but for better results (epic sound) we recommend using an old stereo from a thrift store or garage sale. Please note that all the resource files can be found at the BOTTOM of this page as downloadable links.

We bought our stereo for $5 at a thrift store. While you can use an iPod or cell phone to power speakers, the sound will be much much less than using a stereo.

If you do use a stereo be warned, max stereo power plus max volume on your audio device will cause the tape to heat up. Prolonged use may even get hot enough to cause pain or melt thin plastic.

Use some rare earth magnets if you have them.

Both 1/4th and 1/8th inch wide Maker Tape work well for this project, but we recommend using the 1/4th inch if you're using a stereo system. The wider tape helps dissipate the heat better and allows for a larger sound.
